Scenario # 2: Devolution
Most youth ministries get really small while a few get really big.  What will this do to the professionalism of youth ministry by 2014?

  1. Great question Chris!

I would propose a few things for the professional youth minister:
    1) Called to an area, not a congregation – while a “mother” church may take on the role of main supporter of a professional youth pastor, perhaps more will see themselves as apostles to a geographic area rather than chaplains to an existing congregation
    2) Youth trainers – part of the polarization (more professional or not at all) in youth ministry will require those that are professional to see a good part of their job as training up volunteer youth workers not just from their church but all over their community (this is happening in a few denominations already)
    3) show me the money – professionals will need to become skilled at finding resources and utilizing them effectively
