Jumping The Shark…?

Did you hear Starbucks is testing (in Seattle only) a $1 cup of coffee and free refills? Here is a link to one of many of the articles out on the web: http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/

Who knows if this idea will go worldwide but one thing is certain… our youth budgets will be able to handle a lot more cups of coffee with students and leaders!

Chris,
Yeah, I think so…..
If they introduce a $1 cup of coffee this may give starbucks a different perception to the public. This perception may included: cheap, non-classy, easily reproducable, and fast foodish.
And who knows maybe this is the perception people have on Starbucks already. But I think when a corporation reduces it price, this may imply the quality reduces.
I do not know….I will still keep thinking about this one…..
However starbucks is absolutely geniuses at marketing. For example, when starbucks when to Japan, they paid people to stand on the busiest street corners holding a “starbucks cup”.

Jeremy-
I think you are probably right about the implications to the perception of the public. Seems to me that starbucks is jumping the shark - or moving away from their original storyline and mission. We’ll see if the testing in Seattle is enough to have them test it in other large markets.

Chris,
Okay. I talked to one of my JR high adult leaders who is the store manager at the Laguna Beach location and she said that any starbucks location can honor this $1 cup of coffee, not just in Seattle. You simply need to ask for it and they have to honor it.
So I will try it today.
Chris will you be in Southern California anytime soon?

nice! i am going to give that a try here in Chi-town.
I don’t have plans to be in SoCal anytime soon — unless I get an invite
